BLOOD ON THEIR HANDS

(6 customer reviews)

Little does attorney Hiram Garbuncle know the danger he’s getting into when he reluctantly
defends a man brutally beaten by two policemen during a traffic stop and charged with resisting
arrest. Plot twists and turns take the reader on a suspense-filled roller coaster ride as the
attorney’s negligence causes a mistrial. He then discovers incriminating evidence against the
cops, and his new challenge becomes how to keep himself and his client alive pending a new
trial.
Garbuncle is an alcoholic, whose behavior startles the judge. The attorney’s miserly ways cause a
tug-of-war with his burly apartment tenant, who ends up helping with the investigation. But
when the woman Garbuncle falls in love with is caught up in the probe, tragedy threatens.
Blood on Their Hands has everything: suspense, thrills, plot twists, comedy, a moving love story,
crackling courtroom drama, unforgettable characters, realistic dialogue, intrigue, moral tension,
and a message that resonates in our time.

  1. Vision Quest

The story just keeps on getting better and better as Hiram gets more invested in the outcome …
I stayed up half the night racing to the finish of the book. It's fabulous. The plot is amazing, with
breath holding moments as well as some great laughs. Hiram becomes a character that grows on
you. The ending was perfect and I ended up really wanting more. I'd love to see more of Hiram
and his escapades … yes maybe even a series. Get the book. You'll enjoy the story, shake your
head over Hiram and will definitely LOVE the ending!

  2. Janelle Komorowski

If you’re a Grisham fan, you’ll love this book. It has suspense, drama, a wrongfully accused client, an alcoholic attorney, and. more. I tend to read books at one sitting, and this one did not disappoint.

  3. Barton Kunstler, Ph.D.

    Excellent, tight legal thriller!
Blood on Their Hands is an excellent legal thriller (no spoilers ahead) that takes place in Florida against the back-drop of small-town policing. Brink’s main characters are drawn with warmth and humor and he brings you into the plot’s ethical dilemmas immediately. The action is crisp and the the plot moves swiftly along through various surprising twists and turns. Brink’s understanding of legal machinations informs the action and the way a traffic stop turns into something much, much more serious is more timely than it has ever been. Blood on Their Hands also lays bare the casual, entrenched nature of racism in our society, how tragedy often grows out of off-handed acceptance of ignorance and pointless hate. The book’s tension builds, the characters are colorful and absorbing, and I strongly recommend this book as an addition to the great tradition of Florida thrillers.

  4. The Prairies Book Review

Powered by expert plotting and topnotch characterization, the story pulls readers in, keeping them turning pages until the exhilarating, tension-filled ending. Imaginative prose and sharp dialogue are bonus points. Despite the issues of racism and corruption at its heart, the novel is a suspense-filled, fast-paced crime drama that lovers of finely constructed crime thrillers won’t want to miss. Deliciously readable!

  5. Kirkus Reviews (the gold standard of book reviews)

Garbuncle is an entertaining protagonist—his life is so insistently chaotic it almost seems like an expression of authenticity—but he’s … a hopelessly cynical man who finds an opportunity for some measure of moral redemption. Brink keeps the plot briskly paced and the novel as a whole brief … An intriguing lead …

  6. D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

As Hiram Garbuncle finds himself in the unlikely position of battling police brutality and corruption, he changes. This process of confrontation, realization, and growth drives a story that keeps readers guessing about just how far Ham will go to both realize new abilities and purposes and form a revised vision of life and his place in it. Astute, thought-provoking, involving, and growth-oriented, Blood on Their Hands excels in satisfying twists and turns designed to keep readers engaged on many levels, up to its satisfying conclusion.
